2006 |

The
Officer of the Year is nominated by fellow employees and vetted through a
selection committee. This year Detective Dallas Hyde was named Officer of
the Year.
Hired by the Woodland
Police Department in August 2000 as a Police Officer Trainee while attending
the Sacramento County Law Enforcement Academy, Dallas graduated from the
academy in January 2001, and was sworn in as a full-time Patrol Officer. He
worked as a Patrol Officer until June 2003 when he was selected to be a
School Resource Officer (SRO) for the department. In 2006, Dallas was
selected to fill a detective vacancy in the Investigations Division. He is
also a member of the Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) and the Honor Guard.
Officer Hyde is
recognized for his involvement in the community with his support of the
Woodland Soroptomist Annual Holiday Bazaar, the PTA, Woodland High School
cheerleader’s fundraisers, and fundraising events at the Willow Springs
Elementary School. He has participated in the Every 15 Minutes Program at
our local high schools and the Woodland Police Department’s Shop-With-A-Cop
program presented in conjunction with Wal-Mart, and he is a Cal Ripken
baseball coach.

The
2006 Employee of the Year is Crime Analyst Elizabeth Gunson, who is
recognized by her peers as a team player in her daily work with individual
officers, the GVSU team, the Investigations Division, and Administration in
providing information and analysis of crimes and crime trends. Her
optimistic, cheerful, and welcoming attitude has made the Crime Analysis
Unit a friendly work environment that invites all department members to
share information in a constructive manner. She has provided endless
information, which is always kept current, to officers and detectives. She
has developed flyers and binders for specific beats and subjects. She also
uses e-mail notification and distribution as well as computer-accessible
historical records that officers can access in their cars through the mobile
data system.
Elizabeth works
cooperatively with other city departments to develop and maintain crime
mapping for internal use and distribution to the local newspapers. She also
works closely with crime analysts from other agencies to develop faster and
more efficient ways to share information.

Officer
Lewis LeFlore has been selected the Woodland Police Department's Officer of
the Year for 2005.
Officer LeFlore received several nominations from all ranks of the
department. In their nominations Department members highlighted Lewis’
leadership and willingness to seek solutions. Lewis is recognized for his
integrity demonstrated through his work ethic. Lewis was always there to
handle his beat, and available to help others. Lewis attends neighborhood
watch meetings when they occur on his beat. Lewis has partnered frequently
with citizens to learn their concerns and help find solutions. Lewis treats
everyone, even those he arrests, with professionalism and respect. Lewis'
beat knowledge, ability to talk with people, and relentless pursuit of the
facts greatly assisted in the apprehension of the suspects in the murder of
Officer Andy Stevens.
Lewis’ problem solving continues in the Department. He worked with other
Department members to identify use of force options, and spearheaded the
Department’s efforts to secure first class gym equipment for our training
room. Lewis is described by his peers as being humble and modest, but is
respected for his commitment to law enforcement and dedication to the
Woodland Police Department. It is with great pleasure that we recognize
Officer Lewis LeFlore as the Woodland Police Department Officer of the
Year.

at the Department's annual awards ceremony at the Woodland Opera House in
February 2006.

Management
Analyst J Hess has been selected as the Woodland Police Department's
Employee of the Year for 2005.
Ms. Hess
received nominations from all corners of the Department. Ms. Hess joined
the Woodland Police Department in 2004. Since then she has been in charge
of training, permits, production of our annual reports, and many other
ancillary duties. As training manager she has organized eighteen trainings
within the Department, and coordinated sending all Department personnel to
mandated training. She also organized our training schedules and records in
order to comply with POST standards. Officers have commented that Ms. Hess
has a can-do attitude when it comes to training and goes out of her way to
get officers to the training they need. Ms. Hess' work has also been
recognized by our POST representative, who has invited her to present her
“best practices” to other training managers. Ms. Hess is always
professional in her dealings with the public and demonstrates the same
can-do attitude. She has helped with other department events such as the
Shop with a Cop, the DARE golf tournament and other events. Ms. Hess is
described as dedicated, professional, but most of all caring.

Officer
Robert Strange has been selected the Woodland Police Department's Officer of
the Year for 2004. Officer Strange has been with the Department since
1998.
Officer Strange
joined the Department as a Police Officer with the Patrol Division. In
2001, he was assigned to the
Gang Violence Suppression Unit, where he serves as the Department's
Gang Officer.
Officer Strange was honored
at the Department's annual awards ceremony at the Woodland Opera House in
February 2005.

Systems Support Technician Shesh Ananthula first joined the City of Woodland
as a part-time employee in 2001. In 2002 he was hired as a full-time
technician in the Police Department.
Shesh enjoys training police officers and other staff in the department's
various computer applications, and is very customer service oriented.
In addition to providing routine computer support, his job requires him to
work on a variety of special projects, including the department's mobile
data system (computers in the patrol cars), records management database, and
digital booking photo system.

Sergeant Dan Letamendi has been selected as the Woodland Police Department’s Officer of the Year for 2003. Sergeant Letamendi has been an employee of the Department since 1986.
He was assigned to the patrol division. In 1989 he was transferred to the Traffic Unit where he served as a DUI enforcement officer. and later as a K-9 officer. In 1999 he was appoint Corporal and in 2000 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. While working as a DUI enforcement officer he participated in a training film produced by the National Traffic Safety Administration on admin per se issues.
As a sergeant he has taken a lead role in the development and implementation of the department’s mobile data project, volunteering to be a primary trainer. Dan actively to on the role of liaison between staff and administration resolving computer software issues and bringing the program on-line. As a result of his thorough knowledge of the computer system he became the “go-to guy” responding to employees’ frustrations and concerns. During this time he filled the role of patrol field supervisor and K-9 program supervisor.
In addition to being selected as the 2003 Officer of the Year, Sergeant Dan Letamendi was the recipient of the Woodland Police Department Life Saving Medal for his actions on August 31, 2003. Sergeant Letamendi assisted the Fire Department in its rescue of an unconscious victim trapped in a burning residence.
Sergeant Dan Letamendi was recognized for his achievement by the Department and his peers at the Woodland Professional Police Employees Association annual Christmas Party held December 20, 2003.

Community Services Officer
(CSO) Pam Wirth has been selected as the Woodland Police Department’s Employee of the Year for 2003. CSO Wirth has been an employee of the Department since 1986.
CSO Wirth was initially assigned to the records division and given the responsibility for processing warrants. She was immediately recognized for her mature perspective and stabilizing influence on her peers. Within her first year of employment she was given the responsibility to train other CSOs.
In 1987 she was transferred to a full-time parking enforcement position in the Traffic Unit. After completing her parking enforcement assignment she was reassigned to Records and selected to assist with clerical duties in the Investigations Division.
In June 1999 she was selected to fill the CSO position in the Crime Analysis Unit. She is described as indispensable member of the Crime Analysis Unit Gang Violence Suppression Team. She has an impressive, wide ranging knowledge of the department’s records management system, and GIS Crime View mapping software. She also excels in working and establishing an excellent rapport with outside agencies.
During the past year she has performed the duties of the two positions in the Crime Analysis Unit, and also acted as the interim Training Coordinator for the department.
She is described as multifaceted worker, who takes to adversity like a duck to water, she has excellent organizational skills and patience. She is a team player who does not seek personal recognition. She a person of impeccable integrity, respected for her good humor, knowledge and dedication.
