Douglas SBD-1 Dauntless - Part 4

Gunner Turret Ring

Previous | Introduction | Step One | Step Two | Step Three | Step Four |

This step is short and sweet. It covers the rear gunner’s turret ring. This is delicate and may give you a little "patience test." But we really did try to keep it realistic and in scale, while still molding it in something less than 300 pieces. I think it is worth the extra building effort. Just go slowly and let the thing have a chance to dry as you add pieces.

As you can see, I have once again added the decal seat belt in spite of being threatened with having to give up my four-digit IPMS number as a non-real modeler for using it. Didn’t my rave out in the last step have any effect? Hey, it’s an out-of-the-box build. OK? Anyway, I prefer to set the ring assembly aside and install it after the plane is almost finished.

It is delicate, and once the thing is dropped down into the fuselage, it is pretty well protected. But why take the risk? Oh yeah, note how that light oil wash helps pop out the detail on this assembly. Well. At least you know it’s there.
